European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
